Baby’s First Year: Ten Must Haves
These ten must-have baby items are my top favourites and recommend for the first year to make mothering tasks smoother.
To bring your little one home, all you really need is diapers and a place to sleep but there are so many items that have made our life easier as parents. Although every baby is different, these essentials had been recommended to me by so many other women and I will continue to cherish their advice as I have more children. These have all saved me from the sleepless nights and beginning days as a mother.
I received more than one of these as gifts when I was expecting. They are heavenly and one of my top must haves. These work by warming up baby wipes from top to bottom to make them more comfortable. Chilly wipes on their bottom can be startling and uncomfortable especially during the middle of the night changes. I would recommend this to any new mom, it is totally worth it.
Newborns love to be lulled to sleep. This baby “husher” as we started call it. worked wonders for us while traveling in the car seat. It produces white noise, with multiple different rhythms for your baby’s preference. Baby can relax and stay sleeping wherever they go. It clips on top side of car seat, charges by USB and is very affordable. We took this everywhere for months, especially when our little one was fussy. This comes in handy on so many occasions when nothing else will soothe your baby.
The cloud baby bassinet is the perfect combination for newborns. It was so handy beside the bed in the beginning, during postpartum recovery because of the side portion that folds down for easy access to baby. The bottom legs can slide under your bed to push the bassinet right up against the side of your mattress. The breathable mesh sides were important to me as a concerned new mom to see and be sure that they are not leaning up against a fabric during sleeping. It is so easy to assemble and disassemble. Includes a beautiful mobile and sound box.
While preparing the nursery I knew a mobile was a must for completing the room. Although they look adorable for your baby to stare up at but also is beneficial to baby. This mobile with beautifully created hanging white objects, also plays music and gives your baby’s brain a boost. Sensory interaction is great for your new baby, it requires them to focus and calms baby while getting used to the transition to crib.
The HydraSense Nasal Apirator is essential. I didn’t realize how important this item was but let me tell you, this clears baby’s nasal passage effectively and safely. It is basically a baby nose vacuum that puts your mind at ease knowing your baby can breathe comfortably. Your newborn can not clear their nose on their own and this allows baby to breathe better, as well as sleep and eat better.
This Dreambaby adjustable car shade is great for travelling. I didn’t think this was a necessity and didn’t get one of these until we started going in the car more often after the first month with our little one. The sun shade is flexible, foldable and easy to store. This sun protector blocks the glare but not the view.
There are so many sound machines on the market today and I am sure every baby has a preference. For us, we loved the fisher price smart connect soother , it was a life saver. Our little one was teething as early as 4.5 months and was often fussy for a couple of months around that time. Having this was a game changer, when all else failed this sound machine worked like a charm. There are soothing white noises as well as lullabies. You can even control the lighting, sounds and timers from your smart device. I recommend this to anyone with a restless sleeper, a fussy babe or any newborn for entertainment.
The skip hop 3 stage activity centre is a must have and so much fun to see them use. I did a lot of shopping around before buying one, and found that this was inexpensive and versatile for multiple years. I love that there are five different activities that interchangeable. The seat is removable and machine washable which is great in the beginning for newborn spit ups. The bottom is adjustable for different heights. We took this with us anytime we went overnight because you can take apart and travel with easily. My little one wanted to be in this so often and allowed me to get a few things done while he was entertained. We started using this early as 4-5 months old. The absolute best part about this unit is it can be turned into a table with the seat portion being covered as a flat surface with the bottom floor piece. It was so useful for so many stages, we now use it as a table to play at with activities attached.
Jolly jumpers have been along for forever and they are so simple and easy to use. This door clamp jolly jumper hangs securely in any doorway and is so easy to take down, fold and store. My little one was in this at five months and enjoyed standing upright on his own for a few minutes. The jumper is made with firm material that is supportive to baby’s spine. They improve balance and help build muscle strength.
I wanted to include my diaper bag because I always imagined how stylish I would be when I became a mom. I knew I wanted something so fashionable that would be compact and hold a lot because I am always an over packer. The miss fong backpack diaper bag is my everyday bag that we take everywhere. It is perfect to carry and goes with anything. The straps are interchangeable which is great. The material is waterproof and doesn’t fade or become worn looking. Sophie the giraffe is super cute and I could not believe how much my little one depended on this teether. The sophie giraffe is so well known for its cute design but I don’t think we could have lived without it. Early on, with teething, it was such a soother. We took this toy everywhere for months especially in the car seat when travelling somewhere for the day. It was great entertainment and comfort for the first year while baby is growing and changing.
